Shelbyville Residents Get Their Geek On
Shelbyville-Shelby County Public Library is participating in ‘Geek the Library,’ a pilot, community-based public awareness campaign. The campaign highlights what people are passionate about and how libraries can support them, in an effort to heighten awareness about the critical funding issues public libraries face.

‘Geek the Library’ features local advertising that introduces ‘geek’ as a verb, and encourages the public to talk about what they ‘geek’—whether it’s engineering, superheroes or art. The public awareness campaign illustrates the fact that everyone is passionate about something—everyone ‘geeks’ something—and that the library supports them all.

The campaign Web site,
www.geekthelibrary.org, provides information about how people can get active and support their local library.

Shelby County Drug Free Coalition

Good Afternoon,
The Shelby County Drug Free Coalition is now accepting proposals for program and project funding for the 2010 Grant Cycle. Programs and projects must seek to reduce substance abuse in one of SCDFC priority areas: underage drinking, adult alcohol abuse, marijuana use, prescription and over the counter drug abuse. Programs/projects must fall into one of three categories: prevention/education, intervention/treatment, or law enforcement. For convenience, a technical workshop is being offered on Friday, September 25 from 1-3pm. The workshop will cover problem statements, objectives and strategies, filling out the application and other important information for 2010. SCDFC staff and board members will be available to answer questions as well. This workshop is not mandatory for proposal consideration. However, attendance is highly recommended by the SCDFC Grant Making Committee. The deadline to submit proposals is: 4 pm Friday, October 30.

The forms may be found on the SCDFC Web site: www.shelbycountydrugfree.com
For more information contact the Shelby County Drug Free Coalition at 317-398-3135.
Prescription Drug Awareness Initiative Kick-off
Red Ribbon Community Breakfast
Occasions Banquet Hall
Oct. 2 (Friday)
8:00am
Teens are turning away from street drugs and using prescription drugs to get high at alarming rates. Teens are abusing prescription drugs because they believe the myth that these drugs provide a medically safe high. The majority of teens get prescription drugs easily and for free, often from friends or relatives. (Office of National Drug Control Policy) In addition to substance abuse issues that prescription and over the counter drugs are presenting among youth and adults, the disposal of these medication is an environmental concern as well. Over the past few months, various task teams have come together to work on comprehensive solutions for the problems surrounding this new drug abuse phenomenon.

Please join us for our first annual Red Ribbon Community Breakfast. Come and learn more about our local prescription drug abuse problems, how the community is currently mobilizing to address these problems and what you can do to help!

Shelby County Players

The Unexpected Guest
Performances: Oct. 2, 3, 9, and 10 at 7:30pm

Oct. 11 at 2:00pm

Shelby County Players will present the Agatha Christie mystery, “The Unexpected Guest,” at Shelby Community Theatre, 16 S. Tompkins St.

The play is set on a foggy estate in Wales and opens as a stranger walks into a house to find a man murdered and his wife standing over him with a gun. The woman is dazed and her confession is unconvincing, so the unexpected guest decides to help her and blame the murder on an intruder. Later the police discover clues that point to a man who died two years previously and a Pandora’s box of loves and hates, suspicions and intrigues is opened to the night air.

The play is directed by veteran director Tiffany D. Wilson, who directed “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” in 2008, and she played the part of Audrey in the summer production of “Little Shop of Horrors.” Actors in the show include Keeley Payne, Carey Nigh, Perry Richards, Trent Taylor and Sandra Learned.

Tickets for the show are $10 in advance and $12 at the door; tickets for children and students are $5 in advance and $6 at the door. Tickets are available at Bernard Realty, 270 E. Broadway St.; Borchert Optometry, 273 W. Broadway St.; Mickey’s T-Mart, 748 S. Harrison St.; and The Shelbyville Antique Mall, 117 S. Harrison St.
