Shelby Co. Chamber Weekly Broadcast May 13

Ride Your Bike to Work on May 15
Leave your car at home on Friday, May 15.  That’s National Bike-to-Work Day, when Bicycle Indiana is helping people all over the state to link up and safely ride to work together. Bicycle Indiana, in conjunction with IndyGo and the City of Indianapolis, has organized rides from 11 Indianapolis-area locations, and all will be led by experienced cyclists. All routes end at Monument Circle for a celebration with free breakfast, bike parking, giveaways, demonstrations and other information about bicycling.

Employees can also participate in the Bicycle Garage Indy bike-to-work corporate challenge—a friendly competition designed to reward company “teams” for riding the most total miles.

“Riding your bike to work is exercise with a purpose,” says Bicycle Indiana board member Pete Fritz. “I’m doing something that’s good for me, instead of just sitting in a car. Bicycle commuting is a great way to squeeze regular exercise into a busy schedule. And Indiana employers should support bike commuters, because healthy, active workers miss less work and are more productive.”

The League of American Bicyclists says that employees that bike to work are also happier. Riding stimulates circulation, relieves stress, allows creative thought and fosters a positive attitude.

Bicycle Indiana (formerly the Indiana Bicycle Coalition) is a statewide organization dedicated to creating a bicycle-friendly Indiana. Go to bicycleindiana.org or call 317-466-9701for more information about the Indianapolis Bike-to-Work Day routes and to register for the corporate challenge.

Then gather your co-workers, get on your bike, and ride!

Blue River Bowl
Kids Bowl Free

Web Posted 5/6/2009 5:00:00 PM
Article:  School is out for the summer in less than a month, and parents are starting to look for different activities to fill the long weeks of summer vacation. One option that won't cost any money is Kids Bowl Free program through Blue River Bowl, 1601 S. Miller St., which offers children two free games of bowling each day during the summer.

According to Tom Hebbe, owner of Blue River Bowl, he has distributed thousands of coupons telling the community about this program that is part of a nationwide push to introduce children to bowling, and instructors are at the bowling center each day.

"This is an absolutely, no-strings-attached program that is being rolled out across the nation to provide a safe, fun option for our country's youth this summer," Hebbe said.

Blue River Bowl was selected as one of 100 centers in the U.S. to participate. Over 1,500 public and private schools are part of Kids Bowl Free, and students of all ages can participate.

"This program is our way to expose the sport of bowling to many new participants. We are proud that bowling is the fastest-growing high school sport in America. We hope this summer program will open children's minds to the sport side of bowling while offering them something to do that is free and fun."

In order to participate, parents must visit www.kidsbowlfree.com/blueriverbowl and register their children to receive the two free bowling games every day from now through Aug. 30. After registering online, they will receive e-mails each week for coupons which they can print out and redeem at Blue River Bowl.

Hebbe said the bowling center is busy with activities for families and students throughout the year, so the free bowling is a way of thanking them for their support over the years. Since older family members might also want to participate, Blue River Bowl is offering a special family pass that provides up to four family members of any age to receive two games of bowling each day for a one-time fee of only $23.95.

Blue River Bowl is celebrating its 50th anniversary from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday. In addition to bowling, activities will include live entertainment, cornhole, clowns, balloons, a dunk tank and a bounce house. Pizza, soft drinks, beer and mixed drinks also are available for purchase.

"We will be celebrating all day and night," Hebbe said. "There will be plenty to do outside in the sun and inside on the lanes."

As part of the anniversary celebration, Blue River Bowl patrons will receive their first game and shoe rental free on Saturday.

ABOUT "MONSTERS VS ALIENS": When California girl Susan Murphy is unwittingly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk on her wedding day, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall. The military jumps into action and Susan is captured and secreted away to a covert government compound. There, she is renamed Ginormica and placed in confinement with a ragtag group of Monsters: the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.; the macho half-ape, half-fish The Missing Link; the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B.; and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement is cut short, however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins storming the country. In a moment of desperation, The President is persuaded to enlist the motley crew of Monsters to combat the Alien Robot and save the world from imminent destruction.
