Shelby County Players
Shelby County Players will hold auditions for its upcoming rock musical comedy, “Little Shop of Horrors,” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on May 20 at Shelby Community Theatre, 16 S. Tompkins St.
The casting needs for the show include three men and one woman, ages 18 and over, and three girls or women as harmonizing singers, ages 16 and over. Those who audition are asked to bring a prepared song to sing that showcases their voices; they should bring a tape or sing a cappella. Singers are not expected to sing a song from the musical until callback auditions, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on May 22 at the theater.
Production dates for the show are July 24, 25, 31 and Aug. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and July 26 and Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. Rehearsals are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and music and choreography rehearsals will be scheduled on Saturdays. Actors who audition should bring a list of upcoming conflicts due to jobs, vacations or camps.
The story of “Little Shop of Horrors” centers around a nerdy florist shop worker named Seymour who raises a plant that feeds on human blood. The plant, Audrey II, is actually an important character in the show. One actor will work the body of the plant, while another actors says the plant’s lines through a microphone.
In addition to Seymour, main characters are Mr. Mushnik, the owner of the flower shop, and another employee in the shop, Audrey, who allows her drug-crazed, sadistic dentist boyfriend to beat her up until Seymour decides to step in and feed the unpleasant fellow to the plant.
The dentist role was played by Steve Martin in a movie version of the play, and it requires “a wild and crazy guy” to pull off the part.
Three harmonizing street urchins are important characters in the play and keep the musical moving with their “Greek chorus” comments about what is happening. The show also requires a number of extras to play the Skid Row residents — such as bag ladies and drunks sprawling on the street corners, and sing in the chorus. “Little Shop” also will need a number of crew members — including volunteers to run lights and sound and people to take care of props, costumes and makeup.
Obviously not a traditional musical, “Little Shop of Horrors” is a spoof of the cheesy science fiction movies of the 1950s, with plenty of outrageous, over-the-top action that is funny and tragic at the same time. The stage director is B.J. Fairchild-Newman, music director is Adam Kruse and the choreographer is Jill Evans.

Triton Central High School
Shelby County Council Awards Triton Central High School Tiger New Tech funds for New Tech program implementation!
On April 21, 2009 the Shelby County Council awarded Triton Central High School Tiger New Tech $77,500 for the implementation of New Tech Spanish and a credit recovery and acceleration lab. The Spanish course, led by Mr. Michael Buck, will use project-based learning to enhance student learning and provide services to the Hispanic community in Shelby County. The credit recovery and acceleration lab will afford students the opportunity to make up credits for graduation as well as take classes online. The online classes will allow students take subjects not presently offered in the Triton Central curriculum.
As remodeling work continues to progress, Triton Central Tiger New Tech is preparing for the New Tech Project Based Learning model to begin during the 2009-2010 school year. Support from community leaders, and state leaders alike, including Dr. Tony Bennett, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Indiana, continues to pour in for Northwestern Consolidated Schools and the proactive New Tech initiatives.
The Northwestern Consolidated School District is thankful for the generous allocation of funds for the New Tech initiative - and will continue to report on its progress throughout the summer months.

Article : School is out for the summer in less than a month, and parents are starting to look for different activities to fill the long weeks of summer vacation. One option that won't cost any money is Kids Bowl Free program through Blue River Bowl, 1601 S. Miller St., which offers children two free games of bowling each day during the summer.
According to Tom Hebbe, owner of Blue River Bowl, he has distributed thousands of coupons telling the community about this program that is part of a nationwide push to introduce children to bowling, and instructors are at the bowling center each day.
"This is an absolutely, no-strings-attached program that is being rolled out across the nation to provide a safe, fun option for our country's youth this summer," Hebbe said.
Blue River Bowl was selected as one of 100 centers in the U.S. to participate. Over 1,500 public and private schools are part of Kids Bowl Free, and students of all ages can participate.
"This program is our way to expose the sport of bowling to many new participants. We are proud that bowling is the fastest-growing high school sport in America. We hope this summer program will open children's minds to the sport side of bowling while offering them something to do that is free and fun."
In order to participate, parents must visit www.kidsbowlfree.com/blueriverbowl and register their children to receive the two free bowling games every day from now through Aug. 30. After registering online, they will receive e-mails each week for coupons which they can print out and redeem at Blue River Bowl.
Hebbe said the bowling center is busy with activities for families and students throughout the year, so the free bowling is a way of thanking them for their support over the years. Since older family members might also want to participate, Blue River Bowl is offering a special family pass that provides up to four family members of any age to receive two games of bowling each day for a one-time fee of only $23.95.
Blue River Bowl is celebrating its 50th anniversary from 11 a.m. to midnight on Saturday. In addition to bowling, activities will include live entertainment, cornhole, clowns, balloons, a dunk tank and a bounce house. Pizza, soft drinks, beer and mixed drinks also are available for purchase.
"We will be celebrating all day and night," Hebbe said. "There will be plenty to do outside in the sun and inside on the lanes."
As part of the anniversary celebration, Blue River Bowl patrons will receive their first game and shoe rental free on Saturday.

Fresh new look, same great name. When Dennis and Ruth Baker purchased Swinford Lumber Company twenty-one years ago and changed the name to Builders Lumber and Hardware, Inc., they never would have expected the number of changes the business would have to go through in order to continue to provide the best products and service possible for the customers of Shelby County. Over the years they have stood the test of time and became the lumberyard and hardware of choice for most of the local builders, remodelers and the do-it-yourselfers. In order to help Shelby County residents and businesses conserve their time and gas by not having to drive to Greenwood or Indianapolis for their materials, each year they have enhanced their hardware and building materials offering by becoming more of a home center versus just your typical hardware or lumberyard. For example in recent years they added Grill Zone, featuring the Weber Grill line, became a Certified Scotts Lawn Pro Dealer for those that take pride in grooming their lawns and enhanced their kitchen and bath cabinet displays and offering.
One of the more noticeable changes that took place this past thirteen years was creating a separate division to help supply the local manufacturing companies with their maintenance, repair and production items. In 1996 their son Brian joined the business to head up this division. Prior to Brian being hired, Builders was an established supplier for many of the manufacturing companies here in Shelby County, but they mainly used Builders as a secondary source or when they were in a pinch. At the time, Brian’s sole job responsibility was to target the commercial/industrial businesses and enhance Builders’ programs and product offerings so that they could become the first choice locally for the maintenance, repair and operational items for Shelby county industry, government, municipalities, schools, churches and other businesses. The past ten years the industrial division of Builders, known as BLH Industrial Supply, has added three additional staff members and has had huge successes in becoming a main supplier for many of the target customers listed above for Shelby and surrounding counties. Their product offering includes: hand and power tools, abrasives, cutting tools, material handling equipment, janitorial supplies, safety and personal protection products, office products and construction equipment and supplies.
Their latest addition into making sure peoples valuable time is not squandered by having to shop at several locations was the opening of a full-line tool, equipment and party rental department in 2004. Each year they have added additional tools, equipment and party goods to their rental inventory so that the contractors, industry and homeowners could comfortably tackle any project and take advantage of their quality rental equipment and service all under one roof. When Brian and Dennis knew that tool and equipment rental was in their future they had a local construction company add an additional 3,500 sq. ft to their existing building so that they could join the industrial supply and rental divisions into the same area. At that time BLH Industrial Supply became BLH Industrial Supply and Rental.
Though they have had great success in all areas of their business, which they quickly give credit to their great staff and loyal customers, over the years they feel they may have confused their fair share of people by having two separate business names and two separate logos that operate out of one common location. Many times people have not associated Builders with BLH and vice-versa. Their business truly can be viewed as a one-stop-shop for contractors, homeowners and maintenance and purchasing personnel. This past winter they sat down with a local marketing person to help them wrap all that they offer into one name and logo for all to associate with. They considered a total company name change but with having an established business of twenty-one years they hated to abandon what most were accustomed to. Several years ago they created the BLH division of Builders to separate the two because in the past hardware stores were not viewed as a viable competitor in the commercial/industrial supply world. But over the years and with the success of BLH, most have realized that they are competitive and are a great source for all their everyday production and maintenance needs. Even though there have been two separate names for ten years many of the long-time customers still refer to the industrial division as Builders. Rather than to try to break old habits their new name and logo features predominately Builders because most use that name for short. But they have incorporated all facets of their business into the new logo; under the name of Builders is listed Lumber, Hardware, Industrial Supply and Rental.
They even revamped their tag line from “Serving the Contractor, Industry and Do-It-yourselfer” to “Building Relationships One Project at a Time”. Over the years they have been so grateful for the relationships that they have had the opportunity to build with their customers. Each year they contribute thousands of dollars back to our community though donations and sponsorships and that all goes back to being committed to the relationships they have built. These relationships are so important to them and they truly are the backbone of their business. With today’s fast paced society, they wanted to highlight what has made them such a great success for Shelby County, relationships.
Though there has been a lot of talk about a Lowes coming to Shelbyville, Dennis, Ruth and Brian know that with growth opportunities comes increased competition. For businesses in Shelbyville competition is nothing new with the close proximity to Greenwood and Indianapolis and with the explosion of internet buying. But none the less there is a certain amount of uncertainty when a competitor such as Lowes, wants to set up shop in your back yard. There are so many independent family owned businesses in Shelbyville that I am sure that with today’s economy all will see some negative impacts. This in the long run could be detrimental to our community because so many of these businesses are the ones that support, donate to and volunteer for several of the organizations in Shelby County. In the end though, they feel by being a local family owned business, which is committed to putting its best effort into every interaction, still means a lot to this community. Their quality products, staff and personal service that they have been known for will go a long way when competing with a box store. So in the recent weeks when you see their new logo, think of “Fresh new look, same great name”

If you missed the first live event of the season, an audience participation murder mystery, you can still join in all the fun for the upcoming live entertainment season.
Here’s a list of entertainers IN THE GARDEN for June, & July:
June 12 – Point of View Comedy Team featuring Mark Steenbarger and Sarah Goedde. Humor the whole family can enjoy.*
June 26 – Sharon Riedman, Gospel Singer and Evangelist. A mix of contemporary and traditional favorites. Sharon is a regular every year at the Kettle.*
July 10 – Rushville Jazz Band will perform in the garden. If you like jazz, you’ll love the Jazz Band.*
*Schedule:
6 p.m. - Dinner includes the Kettle’s signature Fried Chicken Dinner with all the trimmings, tax, tip & beverage.
7 p.m. - Show in the garden (weather permitting)
$20 per person, no coupons honored for live events.
